The Art Department at Carson-Newman College is a vibrant, growing department, full of energetic artists and scholars. We offer the BA Degree in Art and the BA Degree in Photography, both with traditional fine art foundations within a 4-year liberal arts program. Because we have been an institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Art and Design since 1992, our students can be assured that our Art Department meets exacting standards of quality on a national level. Art Majors at Carson-Newman may choose an emphasis area of Drawing & Painting, Teaching, or Graphic Design. Photography Majors do not declare an emphasis area, but may choose courses in fine art photography, photojournalism, and commercial photography. Both majors require students to acquire traditional basic art-making skills, and then allow for considerable individual exploration at upper levels of study.
The Art Department is housed in the Warren Art Building, which includes two art galleries, student studios, black & white and color darkrooms, studios, a Macintosh computer design lab, classrooms, and faculty offices. The art faculty are active professionals who have published and/or exhibited their works, and/or won awards on the state, regional and national levels. Art and Photography majors participate in monthly exhibits of their work in the Student Gallery. Art and Photography majors also have opportunities to gain experience through art assistantships for credit or pay through College Work Study.
