ARTICLE I. Members and Patrons
SECTION 1. Membership
A. Eligibility.
A candidate for membership shall be either a music major or minor,
or the equivalent of a music minor. He or
she shall also have
completed at least the first semester of his or her freshman year. The
candidate shall have
completed one
semester of music theory and one semester of
applied lessons. The national academic
requirements are a 3.0
("B") average in music courses and a 2.0 ("C") average in
non-music courses during
the semester preceding application. Alpha Gamma
Chapter, however, requires a 2.5 GPA in non-music courses. A 3.0 GPA must also
be maintained in all music courses.
B. Selecting candidates for Perspective Members in Training (PMITs)

Candidates shall request membership by submitting a completed application
to the first |

(2) Candidates shall appear before the Chapter in an interview at
which time each candidate will be |
|
a. What influenced your major or minor in music? |
|
b. What are your future plans regarding music? |
|
c. Which areas of music do you prefer and why? |
|
d. What do you expect to gain from Delta Omicron? |
|
e. How can you, as a member of
Delta Omicron, further the cause of music in your community and in your world? |
| f. What do you feel you can contribute to Alpha Gamma Chapter? |
(3) Candidates shall have the affirmative vote of three-fourths of
all Chapter members in good standing.
Eighty percent of the entire
membership must be present in order to hold a vote. The vote shall
be
by secret ballot. This vote takes place following the
interview.
(4) The secretary shall extend written bids to approved candidates
within twenty-four hours following
the interview.
(5) Each candidate shall respond to the first vice-president within
twenty-four hours of receiving his or
her bid. He or she may respond
by e-mail, telephone, or in person.
(6) All candidates accepting the invitation to Prospective Member
Training shall appear before the
Chapter in a Pledge Ceremony. New
PMITS shall be presented with a prospective member pin to be
worn until
initiation.
C. Prospective Member Training
(1) There shall be one prospective member training period during the
fall semester as well as one
prospective member training period during the
spring semester.
(2) The prospective member period shall not exceed four to six weeks.
(3) Prospective members shall perform in their discipline on a
Prospective Member Recital. The recital
can be open or closed.
Selections must be in the classical style and performed from memory.
(4) Prospective members shall complete a Prospective Member Project of their own design.
(5) Prospective members shall pass a written Fraternity Knowledge Exam.
(6) Prospective members shall devise a game to be played by actives during Swap Day.
(7) Prospective members shall present a gift to the Chapter following the Initiation Ceremony.
(8) Prospective member activities shall include, but are not limited to:
a. Rush party
b. Interview of and vote on candidates by actives at the beginning of
training.
c. "Secret Pal" appointment
d. Pledge Ceremony
e. Weekly Prospective Member Meetings
f.
Prospective Member Recital
g. Scavenger Hunt
h. Social activities with actives
i. Fraternity Knowledge Exam
j. Swap Day/Final Vote of prospective members (secret ballot)
k. Initiation Ceremony
l. Presentation of Prospective members by "Secret
Pals"
(9) All rush and prospective member activities shall be left to the discretion of the Chapter.
(10) All rush and prospective member activities shall be required for actives and prospective members.
D. Final vote on candidates
(1) A final vote shall be taken following Swap Day.
(2) A candidate for collegiate membership shall have the affirmative vote
of three-fourths of all chapter
members in good standing. Eighty percent of the entire membership must be
present in order to hold
a vote. The vote shall be by secret ballot.
(3) All negative votes shall be examined. Explanations shall be given for objections to candidates.
(4) After candidates have been confirmed by a final vote, actives will
perform a Tapping and invite
candidates to participate in initiation.
SECTION 2. Descriptions of members and patrons/patronesses
A. Collegiate members.
Members shall be initiated according to aforementioned procedure. Members
shall maintain a 3.0 GPA in all
music
courses, as well as a 2.5 GPA in all non-music courses. Members wishing to
hold an office shall
remain in
good standing with Alpha Gamma Chapter. They shall also maintain
appropriate GPAs.
B. Chapter Mother/Father
Each collegiate Chapter may have a Chapter Mother or Father. He or she
shall be initiated by the collegiate
Chapter and
shall enjoy all privileges of the fraternity, including the wearing of a
badge. Immediately upon
initiation he
or she shall assume alumnus status.
C. Professional member.
A professional members shall be a music faculty member, a graduate of a
recognized music school, a concert
artist or
other professional musician. A professional member shall be initiated by a
collegiate Chapter. A
professional
member shall assume alumnus status immediately upon initiation or may be
affiliated with a
collegiate
Chapter for a period of not more than one year. A professional initiate
shall be exempt
form the PMIT
examination and any PMIT fee.
D. Patrons/Patronesses
A Chapter patron or patroness shall be a person interested in music, in the
purposes and objectives of Delta
Omicron and
in the members. Those selected as Chapter Patrons/Patronesses shall be
recognized as such
by the
Chapter and designated as a Chapter Patron/Patroness.
SECTION 1. Officers of the Chapter
A. The president
shall call and preside at all meetings of the Chapter. He or she shall act
as a liaison between the
Chapter and the Music Department. The
president shall also remain in close contact with the Chapter Adviser in
regard to the welfare of the Chapter.
B. The first
vice-president shall be responsible for the prospective member program. He
or she shall be designated
as the "Prospective Mother" or
"Prospective Father," and shall be a liaison between the Chapter and
the
Prospective Member Class. He or she
shall design and direct the entire prospective member program.
C. The second
vice-president shall be involved in Alumni relations. He or she shall
design and deliver the Alumni
newsletter and set up an Alumni database.
D. The treasurer
shall be in charge of all Chapter funds. He or she shall be responsible
for all fund raising and shall
solely be in charge of Coffee Houses.
E. The secretary
shall keep minutes of all officer and regular business meetings. He or she
shall also take
attendance at all mandatory
functions. The secretary shall also deliver bids to potential prospective
members
during prospect season.
F. The music adviser
shall develop monthly music programs for Chapter musicales. He or she
shall also design the
Chapter yearbook, which is due at the first
formal business meeting of the year.
G. The chaplain shall organize devotionals and sacred music for monthly business meetings.
H. The director of
publicity shall prepare a monthly publicity report for the province
president. He or she shall be
responsible for all publicity of the
Chapter and its members.
I. The
historian shall be responsible for maintaining and designing the Chapter
Achievement Book. He or she
shall serve as photographer for all events and
shall also assist in writing the history of the Chapter required at
the end of each year.
J. The warden shall
serve as the custodian of Chapter property. He or she shall prepare the
room for all meetings
and ceremonies and post signs for all
events. Each sign must say "required" and "wear
badge".
K. The pianist shall be
appointed by the president. He or she shall serve as accompanist for all
meetings and
ceremonies.
L. For neglect of
duty, an officer may be removed by a two-thirds vote of the Chapter or by joint
consent of the
Board of Directors and the province president.
SECTION 2. Meetings
A. Meetings shall be open to members of the fraternity only Faculty Sponsor must be a member to attend meetings.
B. Meetings shall
include a regular business meeting, an informal business meeting, and a musicale
each month.
Active members shall perform in fifty
percent of all musicales that require performance. These meetings may be
combined if necessary.
C. Special meetings
shall be called as needed by the president or by three members in good
standing. All Chapter
members and advisers shall be notified of
such meetings at least twelve hours in advance.
D. Meeting times and locations shall be left to the discretion of the Chapter.
E. The president
shall have the authority to require any meeting, musicale, prospective member
activity, or function
with appropriate prior notice.
SECTION 3. Other events
A. There shall be two open musicales each year.
1. One musicale of the year must be a "Benefit" Musicale to aid in the Scholarship Fund.
B. There shall be an observance of Founders Day on or near December 13.
C. There shall be an observance of Charter Day on or near the date of Chapter installation.
SECTION 4. Advisers
A. Each collegiate Chapter shall have a Faculty Sponsor who may or may not be a member of the fraternity.
B. Each collegiate Chapter
shall have a Chapter Adviser and additional advisers as needed, who shall be
selected
from the alumni membership. The
Chapter Adviser shall attend Chapter meetings, counsel from the standpoint
of the fraternity, and perform specific
duties as outlined by the Board of Directors.
SECTION 5. Committees
A. The Banquet committee
shall
be responsible for the Annual Spring Banquet. Its members shall organize
the
banquet, coordinating with the Cafeteria
staff, designing and delivering invitations, and securing musicians.
B. The Beaux/Belles committee
shall be responsible for Chapter Beaux/Belles. Its members shall inform
beaux/belles of their duties and express
the Chapter's appreciation of their position through special projects.
C. The Bulletin Board committee
shall be responsible for the maintenance of all Alpha Gamma bulletin
boards.
Its members shall update the Scholars of
the Month and all other bulletin boards on a monthly basis.
D. The Bylaws committee
shall annually review the Chapter Bylaws and make revisions as necessary.
E. The Fundraising/Coffee Houses committee
shall be responsible for organizing all fundraising activities. It shall also be in
charge of the bimonthly
Coffee Houses. Its members shall organize workers for the
Coffee Houses and secure supplies for the events.
The treasurer is the chair of this
committee.
F. The Homecoming committee
shall organize the Alpha Gamma Chapter booth for the annual Homecoming Open
House. Its members shall organize the
booth and secure members to attend to the booth
and provide information to anyone interested in
learning about the Chapter. This is held
at the location where the music department holds its Homecoming Reception.
G. The Patrons/Patronesses committee
shall be responsible for communication and relations with the
Chapter Patrons/Patronesses. Its
members shall organize monthly projects aimed to convey the Chapter's
appreciation to its Patrons/Patronesses.
H. The Scholarship committee
shall organize the selection of recipients for Chapter awards. Its members
shall
hold votes for the awards, tally the votes,
and inform the president and Chapter Adviser of award recipients.
I. The Senior Gifts committee
shall be responsible for placing pink carnations in the Green Room prior to Alpha Gamma Junior/Senior
Recitals. Its
members shall also be responsible for securing alumni cords and gifts for graduating seniors
at the end of
the year. The Alumni cords and gifts are presented at the final formal meeting of the year.
J. The Service committee
shall
be responsible for organizing service projects in which the Chapter can participate. Its members
shall
contact organizations and set up activities on behalf of the Chapter.
K. The Social committee
shall be responsible for planning social events for Alpha Gamma Chapter.
L. The T-shirt committee
shall
be responsible for designing or gathering designs for the Alpha Gamma Chapter T-shirt as well as a
Music Department
T-shirt. Its members may confer with the fundraising committee to develop a
fundraising project with
Music Department T-shirts.
M. The Website committee
shall
be responsible for developing and maintaining the Alpha Gamma Chapter Website. Its members
shall
decide what material should be included on the site as well as keeping
information current and up to
date. The
chapter adviser must be consulted on all entries to be put on the website.
SECTION 1. A national
initiation fee as determined by the Board of Directors and the finance committee
shall be paid
by each initiate prior to initiation.
SECTION 2. The national
badge fee (cost of badge) shall be paid by each initiate prior to
initiation. Every member
must possess a badge. The badge fee is included in the initiation fee.
SECTION 3. National annual
dues, as determined by the Board of Directors and the finance committee and
approved
by a majority vote of the Chapters, shall be paid by each collegiate and alumnus
member.
A. Initiates shall be exempt from payment during the school year of the initiation.
B. Payment shall entitle a member to a subscription to The WHEEL for the current year.
C. Current national annual dues shall be $30.
SECTION 4. Life Membership
A. Life Membership dues shall be determined by the Board of Directors and the finance committee.
B. Life Membership shall place a member in good financial standing with
the fraternity for life and
shall entitle the member to a life subscription to The WHEEL.
C. Life Membership Dues may be paid in full at any time by either a collegiate or an alumnus member.
D. Life Membership may also be accomplished through consecutive payment of
national annual
dues for the required number of years.
E. Current Life Membership shall be paid as ten installments of $30 or a lump sum payment of $300.
SECTION 5. Local Chapter fees shall be determined by each Chapter.
A. Current local dues for Alpha Gamma Chapter shall be $20.
B. Members initiated in the fall semester shall be required to pay one
half of the local Chapter dues
during the spring semester.
SECTION 6. Excuses and fines
A. Excuses. Absences at required functions shall be judged by the
president as either excused or
unexcused. Excuse slips shall be submitted to the president prior to
absence except in
extreme emergencies. Excuse forms shall be found in the student lounge on
the Delta
Omicron bulletin board. Unexcused absences shall be punished by the
imposing of a
fine according to the missed function. Excused absences shall be as
follows:
(1) Class conflict
(2) Death in the family
(3) Family emergency
(4) Extreme illness
(5) Unforeseen and unavoidable emergencies
B. Fines

ARTICLE V. Discipline for members
SECTION 1. Method of discipline.
A member accused of serious unworthy conduct shall be reported in a signed
letter, with full particulars of the
case, to the
International president. After full investigation by the International
president and counsel with
the accused,
the Board of Directors, by unanimous vote, shall have the power to dismiss the
charges, to
impose
censures, to lift the badge temporarily or permanently, and terminate the
membership by expulsion.
SECTION 2. Unexcused absences.
Unexcused absences at mandatory functions shall be punishable by the imposing of
the aforementioned
fines.
Fines shall be paid in full at the next business meeting following the absence
and imposing of the fine.
If fines are
not paid at the next business meeting, fines shall be doubled at each subsequent
Business
Meeting until
the full amount is paid.
A. Student Teachers are not excused
from nightly activities unless they live in another town during the Student
Teacher semester. They are members of Alpha
Gamma until they graduate. This is a policy of the
National Board of Directors.
SECTION 3. Membership resignations are prohibited.
It shall not be
possible for a member to terminate membership in the fraternity by resignation
nor be
dismissed therefore except through
expulsion. Once a member of Delta Omicron one is always a
member of Delta Omicron.
ARTICLE VI. Amendments to Chapter bylaws.
Chapter bylaws shall be amended or revised by a three-fourths vote of the entire Chapter membership. Suggested amendments shall be submitted in writing to the Bylaws committee for review.
AMENDMENT:
The Rising Senior Award is not to exceed the amount of $100 and is to be used for applied lessons.
