Foreign Languages and linguistics
at Carson-Newman College

Welcome to the homepage for the Department of Foreign Languages and Linguistics.  As a department we are dedicated to improving our students’ proficiency in the language they study, and leading them in an exploration of the cultures and literatures of the countries that speak that language.  In choosing a foreign language as an area of study, you will not only be preparing yourself for an interesting and rewarding career but you will also be learning to better comprehend the world in which we live and work.

The Department of Foreign Languages offers majors in French, Spanish, and Linguistics, and minors in French, Spanish, German, and Linguistics.  In collaboration with the School of Religion, students may major or minor in Biblical Languages, and take introductory courses in Koine Greek and Biblical Hebrew.

A major emphasis in the modern languages is on developing an ability to speak, read, and write in French, German, and Spanish. In order to attain high levels of proficiency, our students are strongly encouraged to participate in available study abroad programs.  Our foreign language students may take the opportunity to study either in Germany, Austria, France, Mexico, Spain, or a variety of other countries.  Opportunities to participate in missions trips to foreign countries are also regularly available through the department of Campus Ministries.  Since Carson-Newman is a small college, focused on individualized attention, we are able to find opportunities for our students that fit closely with their needs and interests.

Why Study Foreign Languages?

If you decide to include foreign language in your studies at Carson-Newman , you will find that you have taken an important step in preparing for a career in today’s world. There is an increasing demand for people with foreign language skills in business (from executive and managers to salespersons and secretaries), health professions, state and federal governments (a wide range of positions), and teaching. Many students at Carson-Newman College have double majors; e.g., Spanish and Pre-Med, French and Political Science, German and Business, etc.

Carson-Newman College’s foreign language faculty are well-trained and experienced. The instructors have lived, worked, or studied abroad, and regularly make trips to the countries whose languages they teach. They are dedicated to quality teaching and are eager to help students both in and out of the classroom.

Experience foreign languages, experience the world!  This past spring and summer several of our students studied abroad.  Here are a few pictures.  Top left:  Grant Allen in front of the aqueduct in Segovia, Spain.  Bottom left:  Heather Smith at Teotihuacan, Mexico.  Middle:  Justin Quinn at the yerbería in Morelia, Mexico.  Right:  Brett Ray in Paris.  The department of Foreign Languages encourages our students to take advantage of the many opportunities to study abroad that are available at CN.
