Linguistics at Carson-Newman College
Welcome to the Homepage for the Interdisciplinary Linguistics Program at Carson-Newman College!
Language has a central role in human interaction and activities, and as a result the field of linguistics is situated at the intersection of the humanities and social and behavioral sciences. The formal study of human languages; i.e., linguistics, here at Carson-Newman College maintains an approach to the study of language that capitalizes on this intersection. Faculty and students explore language structure, history, knowledge, behavior and use. Our research aim is to integrate these diverse approaches to language in ways that engender new modes of linguistic inquiry and new research domains. Our program focuses on linguistics as a cognitive and social science, providing a strong theoretical grounding in the core approaches to the discipline, while simultaneously remaining committed to a broad-based Christian Liberal Arts education. Our program takes a strong analytical approach to the study of human language and enables students to have a hands-on experience with linguistics in research settings that can be applied to many related fields (e.g., Anthropology, Education, Foreign Languages, Psychology and Sociology to name a few).
As a young, new program, we’re excited to build a strong a tradition of academic excellence found in the other academic programs offered here at Carson-Newman College. Our interdisciplinary program allows our students to benefit from classes and mentoring from a number of faculty members with diverse academic backgrounds as well as coursework and expertise in the field of linguistics.
