This map shows the regions
of the world where Catalan is commonly spoken (red circles).
Catalan is common to Catalonia, Valencia, the Balearic Islands,
Andorra, and the Roussillon region of France. It comes from
the Romance languages descended from Latin;
Latin in turn descends from the Italic branch of Indo-European.
The Catalan language is most closely related to French,
Spanish, Italian,
Portuguese, Provençal,
and Galician. Catalan
is also similar to Romansch
and Romanian.
