This map shows the regions
of the world where Swedish is commonly spoken (red circle).
Swedish is closely related to Danish,
and it descends from the North Germanic sub-branch of the Germanic
branch of Indo-European languages. Swedish is a bit more distantly
related to those modern languages that descended from Old Norse
(Icelandic, Norwegian,
and Faroese).
