This map shows the regions
of the world where Gujarati is commonly spoken (red circle).
Gujarati is one of the Prakrits or minor colloquial dialects
in modern India. It developed in the Indic family of languages
from the Indo-Iranian branch of Indo-European. Its immediate
ancestor was Vedic Sanskrit.
Gujarati is most closely related to Assamese,
Bengali, Hindi,
Marathi, Punjabi,
Sindhi, Singhalese,
Romany, and Urdu.
