This map shows the regions
of the world where Latvian is commonly spoken (red circle).
About two million speakers of Latvian exist today. Latvian is
also called Lettish. This language comes from the Baltic family
of languages in the Balto-Slavic branches of Indo-European.
It is closely related to Lithuanian
and the extinct language of Old
Prussian.
