Its immediate ancestor was Middle Vedic, which in turn came
from Vedic Sanskrit. Punjabi
is most closely related to Bengali,
Gujarati, Hindi,
Marathi, Assamese,
Sindhi, Singhalese,
Romany, and Urdu.
