This map shows the regions
of the world where Singhalese is commonly spoken (red circle).
The language is also called Sri Lankan. Singhalese developed
in the Indic family of languages from the Indo-Iranian branch
of Indo-European. Its immediate ancestor was Vedic Sanskrit.
Singhalese is most closely related to Assamese,
Gujarati, Hindi,
Marathi, Punjabi,
Sindhi, Bengali,
Romany, and Urdu.
