Calliopeans
The women's societies have their roots in the pre-history
of Carson-Newman College, when the Newman College for women was a separate
entity. The Palladian Reading Club of Newman College met each Friday evening
for "recitations, select readings, dialogues, original essays, criticisms"
and other similar activities (Carr 286). Upon the merger of Carson College
and Newman College, the Palladian Reading Club was replaced by the two
women's literary societies, the Hypatian and the Calliopean. The Calliopean
Literary Society was chartered by the State; their first sponsor was Miss
Ida Lawrence. The application for charter, registered in Dandridge on
October 9, 1901, states in part "The incorporators are Annie Mae
Winslow, Maude E. Lawrence, Sadie M. Mynatt, Lula Hale and Lena McCorkle,
and their successors are hereby constituted a body politic and corporate
under the name and style 'Calliopean Literary Society' ... the purposes
of which are to promote music to elevate the minds of members by discussing
and debating literary and other subjects, and a general social intermingling
of members and guests" (Carr 286).
