Welcome to the Literary Societies' Digital Archives! This collection is a small sample of the many materials held in the Mildred L. Iddins Special Collections at Carson-Newman College's Stephens Burnett Library. The Literary Societies were once the principle source of social events on the Carson-Newman College campus. There were four individual societies. There were two for men, the Philomathean Literary Society and the Columbian Literary Society, and two for women, the Hypatian Literary Society and the Callieopean Literary Society. If, after viewing these pages, you would like to visit the Special Collections and see some of "the real things," and the many other items not included in this exhibit, please feel free to do. It is best to call ahead and make arrangements with our archivist, Al Lang, before visiting. You can reach Al at (865) 471-3542. Summer hours are limited. If you are interested in viewing similar resources from a variety of Appalachian institutions of higher education, we encourage you to visit the Digital Library of Appalachia. This digital repository serves all the members of the Appalachian College Association Appalachian College Association. You will find there many of the images contained within this site, along with a wealth of similar materials from participating member institutions. Please note that the links provided above will open in a separate browser window on your computer.
