A Brief History of the Philomathean Literary Society
The men's societies are the oldest of the literary societies,
both having been organized the same year the College was founded, in 1851.
Isaac Carr, in his History of Carson-Newman College, records
that these societies hosted "public debates and other forensic appearances"
and were deemed beneficial by the faculty (285). Both the Philomathean
and the Columbian Literary Societies were chartered in the State of Tennessee
by the 1857-1858 Legislature. In 1959, when Carr was writing the History
of Carson-Newman College, all four societies continued to meet on Friday
evenings.
