This map shows the regions
of the world where Pashto is commonly spoken (red circle). The
language is in the Iranian family of languages descended from
the Indo-Iranian branch of Indo-European. It is most closely
related to Avestan, Kurdish,
Baluchi, and the extinct
language of Sogdian. It
is somewhat more distantly related to Old
Persian and Persian.
